I’ve been coming to see Amanda for over 7 years for my Gel Nails which I think already says a lot. From the start, it’s always been such a friendly and relaxing place to come that’s got a homely, warm and welcoming setting, which beats any non cosy shop. You also receive a much more personable experience with lots of chatting which I much prefer (previous places where I had my nails done would be in silence). I think if my hands fell off tomorrow, I’d still visit every three weeks for our catch up :).

Thank you for always giving me pretty nails xx

A lovely experience and made me feel completely at ease through all three of my different treatments. I have had a Hot Lava Shell...

6 Science Based Reasons to Meditate!

1.  A 2014 study from the University of Amsterdam has correlated the practice of meditation with attention to detail and creative performance

2.  A 2005 study from the Harvard Medical School has found that meditation increases the thickness of your prefrontal cortex.  This cortex is the part of the brain associated with attention and self-awareness

3.  A 2010 study from the University of California also found that meditation increases your attention span

4.  A 2014 study from the International College in Thailand found that meditators have lower rates or burnout and cope better with stress

5.  A 2009 study from Aarhus University in Denmark found that long-term meditators have thicker brain stems

And finally –

6.  In 2014, a further study from the Harvard Medical School found that meditation increases the density of your grey matter in processing and perspective taking.

So what’s not to like? Learn to meditate and you will be happier, healthier!

A New Year – A New You? Our top 10 tips for beating the winter blues

snow walkingJanuary is well and truly here.  The weather is rubbish, Christmas is over, the decorations are back in the loft and the blues are looming in the wings.  So how do we, not just survive, but thrive in January?  Well here is our top 10 tips for turning January blues into January rock n roll

1.  Put some dancing music on and sing and dance like nobody is watching!  Nothing will change your mood quicker than some carefully chosen ‘up beat’ music.  In fact you could even compile a selection of your favourite tunes especially for ‘down days’.

2.  Give yourself a goal!  It doesn’t matter what it is but write it down, tell everyone you are going to do it and then work out your plan to achieve it.  Why tell everyone? Because you are more likely to achieve if you know everyone is watching and supporting you. If you don’t want to tell anyone else, tell us!

3.  Rope in a buddy to join you – it is much more fun training for a Race for Life, Mud Run, or a Marathon if you have a friend by your side and you can keep each other motivated.

4.  Watch a funny film or call a friend who always makes you laugh – laughter really is the best medicine.  It actually changes the hormones and cells in your body – REALLY!

5.  Book yourself a treat (remember we can always help with that one!)  Something as simple is a manicure can really lift your spirits.

6.  Grab some old magazines and a few friends then spend a couple of hours having fun making a 2014 Vision Board (follow link for more details)

7.  Try and do at least one thing a week that is outside of your comfort zone – you will be amazed how great you will feel once you have done it!

8.  Do something nice for someone else.  Do it for no other reason than you can.  It will be worth it, we promise.

9.  Try some exercise.  If you aren’t already, do something to get your body moving.  It doesn’t matter what level of ability you have, there will be something you can do.  Exercise releases endorphins – the happy hormone.

10. Find someone to hug.  Even if you live alone you can find someone, the cat, your best friend, the neighbour’s cat or even the neighbour (make it clear you are not taking up stalking though 😉 )  The person you want to hug not around?  Then picture them in front of you and you giving them a hug in your mind – it works.

Finally, from the Ananda Healing gang – HAPPY NEW YEAR!  May 2014 be your year.

Duncan’s Weight Loss Challenge – Part 5 The true cost of my challenge

Duncan’s Weight Loss Challenge – Part 5 The true cost of my challenge

People who’ve been showing interest in the Body By Vi weight loss challenge have been asking me about the cost. When I tell them it costs £91.00 per month for the 2 meal replacement per day challenge they tell me it’s too expensive, so I decided to break down my daily costs. Not every day is the same so I took a normal working day as a base.

I’ve based the figures on about a pint of milk per day for the shakes, and cost the shakes as (total monthly cost including postage / 60 meals) £91.00 / 60 = £1.52 per meal. I also add 3 bananas to mix in with them or eat between the meals. So here’s the breakdown;

Challenge Before
Breakfast mix £1.52
Skimmed milk £0.23 £0.45
Banana £0.19
Cereal £0.50
Morning banana £0.19 £0.19
Lunch mix £1.52
Skimmed milk £0.23
Meal deal £3.00
Afternoon banana £0.19 £0.19
Evening meal Same as before
£4.07 £4.33

So I’m saving about 26p per day, and losing weight at the same time!

Obviously it depends on what you eat during the day, but even if it cost me the weight loss would be worth it!

So how about the nutritional side? I’m not a nutritionist by any stretch of the imagination so I’ve plagiarized the below from another blog about the Body By Vi meal replacement shakes.

Ananda Healing Body By Vi Challenge Nutrion Comparison

So, to summarise, it is no more expensive that what I would normally buy in the way of breakfast and lunch. Secondly, and more importantly, nutritionally, I would have to consume 8674 calories of food per meal (as listed above) to get the equivalent nutrients!

If you want any more information about the challenge, and how you can join, email Duncan or check out the Body By Vi Challenge page.

Duncan’s Weight Loss Challenge – Part 4 Why they call it a challenge

Duncan’s Weight Loss Challenge – Part 4 Why they call it a challenge

So here we are 4 weeks into my Body By Vi challenge. I know I keep saying about the positive stuff and there is plenty of that, but for a minute I want to chat about getting disheartened with it all. There are times when I have become disheartened, times when it would be easier to just stop and be fatter rather than fitter, times when I start to question whether it’s worth it. Especially when I see friends and loved ones having wonderful food and I need to sit back and have my shake! I think we all have times where we doubt our actions as we change our habits. But then is the right road the easy one or the difficult one? More often than not the right road for us is the difficult one, and this has proved to be the case this last week. I spent some time struggling this week, feeling hungrier during the day and when I got home I was so hungry I just wanted to grab anything I could.

I didn’t completely fall off the wagon though, I made it through another week and weighed in at my usual time. Seeing the results has hardened my resolve, yes it is worth it! Yes, I do want to go through this as I’m feeling far more energetic, slimmer, enthusiastic about life and ready to take on the World. I have now lost approximately 12lbs in the 4 weeks, almost a stone. I’m very much on track to reach my goal, well ahead of schedule. My waistline has shrunk by 2 inches too. Result!

So what am I doing to keep the demons at bay? I’m stepping things up! I’ve signed up to do a 6k mud run in October, and I’ve started cycling from home to Gatwick Airport and back each workday when I’m catching the train (Something I had been doing but had stopped as it was hard on my back). I’ll be starting a training regime to get fit for this mud run, so I don’t embarrass myself totally come October. It’s gonna be tough, but then the best things in life make you stretch your limits!

I’m going to use the mud run as a chance to raise some money for my Scout Group, 1st Burstow, so if you want to sponsor me please feel free to visit my Just Giving page, when I’ve created it!

Duncan’s Weight Loss Challenge – Part 1 Where and How to Start

Duncan’s Weight Loss Challenge – Part 1 Where and How to Start

So here it is. I have known that my weight has been a problem for a long time, but getting into the right frame of mind to changing has been difficult. The main problem is that after injuring my spine in the mid 90’s and having surgery stopped me from doing a great deal of the exercise that I used to do. Before my injury I did used to be fit, playing, coaching and training at rugby, rock climbing, running etc which all stopped suddenly. Since then my weight has fluctuated between 14½ stone and 18 stone. At times I have been down to the gym but not on a regular basis, as I always seem to pick up injuries to my back. So I’m starting from a reasonably sedentary life.

Taking that as a starting point I weighed in at 15 st 10lbs, with a 41″ waist and 49″ chest. My goal is to lose at least 1 stone in weight and reduce my wait to 37″ within the next 90 days (so by 19th September 2013 to be 14 st 10lbs or less). As I’ve said above exercise is limited to cycling, the occasional walk, golf and working in the garden. Because of this I needed to reduce my intake to be able to lose the weight I needed.

This left me with few options; reduce portion size, stop eating snacks, etc (all of the fun stuff), but I’ve always enjoyed my food. I’d heard about meal replacement drinks and had always shied away from those as I didn’t think a drink could possibly fill me up (For those of you who know me I have a pretty good appetite). Then I was introduced to the Body By Vi range by my brother-in-law, Pat. I would’ve written this off as a fad, but I saw what it had done to his waistline! He told me that he was feeling incredible, with more energy and had lost some 9lbs in 3 weeks. He certainly looked a huge amount better than I had ever seen him! So that’s the start of my journey, 2 meal replacement drinks a days, and a bit of fruit if I’m feeling hungry in between.

I’ve been really surprised so far that I’m feeling really good. I make up a shake in the morning, one at lunchtime and maybe add some fruit or have some fruit during the day (literally one or 2 pieces). Come the evening I do appreciate my dinner and eat with a gusto, but I am feeling much better already. Weight wise I’ll let you know when I start weighing in!

I’m going to keep documenting my weight-loss here, as apart from anything else it helps me to keep on track. Follow my progress here or join me on the way to a healthier, thinner life!

If you’re wanting to start your weight loss challenge, but you can’t get your mind in the right place, look no further. Speak to Duncan about hypnotherapy or NLP to get you started and keep you on track!

Why Did We Leave Corporate Careers To Start Up ANANDA HEALING?

Recently, I had to do a presentation to a room full of strangers who had little or no idea about Ananda Healing, who we are, why we started the business, our ethics, our passion. So, I told them our story, our why!

It struck me afterwards, that probably few of you know the whole story and so I decided to share it with you too

Firstly, who are we? Lets start with Duncan, Duncan is a Reiki Practitioner, Master Hypnotherapist, and Master NLP Practitioner (Neuro Linguistic Programming).  He comes from a very practical, no nonsense background, his family had a carpentry & building business, they ran a small holding and the extended family were all farmers.  He left school to join the Royal Marines and then the Police Force.  Maybe not the background you think of when you think of a therapist?  He loves Mathematics, computers and logic (I prefer shopping myself!).  But how you go from IT to Hypnotherapy and NLP?  To Duncan it is simple – if you can program a computer, you can program a mind – if you can fix a bug in a pr0gramme, you can fix a problem in the mind!  And I have seen him do this so many times, and sometimes at lightening speed! It never ceases to amaze me.

I have seen him fix phobias, fears, self-esteem issues, sports performance, smoking and weight – he is the registered Hypno-Band practitioner for the area (some of you may have heard Paul McKenna talking about this recently – it is basically providing the benefits of a physical gastric band but without the pain, risks, surgery of massive cost! Not to mention an over 70% success rate!).  Duncan is also amazing at dealing with children’s issues, including self-esteem, bullying, psychology impact of divorce etc.

So now you know a little bit about Duncan but why did we set Ananda Healing up? What was behind this ‘crazy’, according to my Mum, decision to give up successful corporate careers to start a therapies business? What are out core values?

We are passionate about well-being, we want people to feel good about themselves.  We want to help people see that there is always a choice.

Both Duncan and myself have had to come to terms with serious health issues in the past and continue to live with these now.  Duncan was a serving Police Officer, aged just 28, when he broke his back whilst riot training.  He could have just given up at this point but he didn’t.  He took a masters degree, carved a new career and, this is the interesting bit, if you ask him about the accident now, he would tell you it was one of the best things that has happened to him.

I too have had a difficult ride with regards to my health, since babyhood really, including a heart condition and Type 1 Diabetes but I would echo Duncan’s thoughts.  I would say the decision that made the greatest difference to me personally was learning to meditate.  My dad considered meditation to be as important as learning to read and write, but then my dad was something special – a story for another day.  For Duncan it was learning to become a Hypnotherapist & NLP Practitioner.  We always say to our clients, “Everyone’s journey is different and you have to find what works for you” – we are just here to facilitate.

We both took responsibility and made positive choices – choices regarding our lives and our well-being.  Many people do not even know that have a choice.  My Dad, who I have already explained was extraordinary, always told me “You may not have a choice in what happens to you but you always have a choice in how you deal with it”  AND THIS IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE WISH TO GIVE OUR CLIENTS

Before we started Ananda healing though we took time to talk and form our ethos that would drive and guide our philosophy. We decided that money would not drive our business, service would. We made the conscious decision to provide the very best for our clients, even if that meant recommending they go to someone else! And we have stuck to that throughout.

We began by specifically offering treatments that enhance well-being and by doing so we saw this was giving people back some control.  I could go on about the research on massage etc and the chemical/physiological changes that happen in the body but, again, that is for another day.  Gradually we also discovered that beyond the holistic therapies, our clients also responded profoundly with treatments that made them look good, which in turn made them feel good.  It started when I was asked, many times, by clients, if I could recommend a skincare range that was natural and, or, provided help with problem skin, children’s skin etc.  It took me two years of research and putting some very strange stuff on my own skin until I eventually found Arbonne, the Swiss formulated, botanical skincare range – it is phenomenal!  (Do let us know if you would like to trial it). It really is the skincare industry’s best kept secret as it is only available through consultants such as ourselves.  Forget what the Celebs are advertising – this is what they are using!.

Because of our discovery about how people look and the effect on their well-being since starting Arbonne, we have decided to now start moving more into the beauty side of the business. We have recently launched the Gelish 21 day manicure system that DOES NOT DAMAGE YOUR NAILS and DOES NOT CONTAIN FORMALDEHYDE.

During the summer we will be launching other beauty services BUT THIS WILL BE DONE, AS ALWAYS, WITH YOUR WELL-BEING AND HEALTH IN MIND.

Your well-being is our passion.

So Why Do Women Love Beautiful Nails?

Ananda Healing Harmony Gelish Manicure NailsIn the last few years, despite recession and difficult times, the nail industry remains in growth – WHY?  Well I have my own theory

A fabulous lady called Rita Davenport once said to me “Women can cope with being poor but they refuse to be ugly”.  Rita was a TV Presenter, President of Arbonne (our fabulous botanical Skincare range) and motivational speaker – a force of nature and a truthful lady.  So, is she right?  Is that our motivation? – a refusal to give in to our perception of ugly?

I continue to be amazed that whatever work I can do as a healer or a massage therapist, still does appear to give the joy I see one someone’s face when I transform short or weak nails into something beautiful, sexy or elegant.  I do believe, from my own research, that when we look down and we see our own nails looking great, it takes us from the mundane, it lifts our spirits and makes us feel more beautiful.  Whatever we see in the mirror, whatever the year on our birth certificate, the balance on our bank statement, the one thing that can be relied upon to make us feel we are still out there, still a woman – whether you are 19 or 91.

The price for this wonder drug we call stunning nails?  £21.99

The results and effects? – Priceless

A Poem to make you think this Christmas

I recently came across this poem in my Sussex Healers Association Magazine.  The poem’s author is anonymous but it is believed to have come from a gentleman who died in a geriatric ward of a nursing home in North Platte, Nebraska.

Read it, I urge you!

What do you see nurses?………………What do you see?

What are you thinking when you are looking at me?

A crabby old man, not very wise, uncertain of habit, with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles his food, and makes no reply.

When you say in a loud voice….”I do wish you’d try!”

Who seems not to notice the things that you do

And forever is losing a sock or a shoe?

Who, resisting or not  lets you do as you will,

with bathing and feeding …The long day to fill?

Is that what you’re thinking?  ……. Is that what you see?

Then open your eyes nurse …………….you’re not looking at me!

I’ll tell you who I am, as I sit here so still,

As I do at your bidding, as I eat at your will.

I’m a small child of Ten, with a father and mother, brothers & sisters who love one another

A young boy of Sixteen with wings on his feet

Dreaming that soon now a lover he’ll meet.

A groom soon at Twenty, my heart gives a leap.

Remembering the vows that I promised to keep.

At Twenty-Five now, I have young of my own

Who need me to guide, and a secure happy home.

A man of Thirty, my young now grown fast,

Bound to each other with ties that should last.

At Forty, my young sons have grown and are gone,

But my woman’s beside me to see I don’t mourn.

At Fifty, once more,  babies play around my knee,

Again, we know children, my loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me, my wife is now dead.

I look at the future, I shudder with dread.

For my young are all rearing young of their own.

And I think of the years and the love that I’ve known.

I’m now an old man and nature is cruel ’tis jest to make old age look like a fool.

The body, it crumbles, grace & vigour depart,

There is now a stone where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass a young guy still dwells,

And now and again, my battered heart swells

I remember the joys, I remember the pain.

And I’m loving and living life over again.

I think of the years, all too few, gone too fast.

And accept the stark fact that nothing can last.

So open you eyes people, open and see.

Not a crabby old man – LOOK CLOSER AND SEE………………………ME!!

How to choose the right therapist for you-My Top Tips

Amanda Lund-Batchelor from Ananda Healing

OK, so you have decided you need or want a treatment and need a local therapist – what do you do now? Google one? Look one up in the Yellow Pages?  Then you find there are 20 in your area alone so which one?  Well here are my top tips for finding the right one for you.

1. Ask your friends if they know anyone. Personal recommendation is always a good place to start, especially if you know someone who has actually tried the therapist themselves.

2. Once you have a name, hopefully by recommendation, but if not, the same applies, give them a call.  Ask them some questions.  Do they sound friendly?  Knowledgeable? Do you think they are someone you could trust and be happy in their company for the hour you are paying for!

3. Ask them to clarify their qualifications and experience.  No therapist who is qualified is going to mind you asking.

4. Are they listed with any governing body, ie. The Beauty Guild

5. Are they insured? This is vital! You are putting your well-being in their hands.  You need to know you are covered.

6. Confirm the price and length of time the treatment will last before committing.  You don’t want any embarrassing surprises on the day.

7. Check if take your means of payment. Again, many small business do not take credit or debit cards.  (We do btw!)

8. Do they insist on a proper consultation before treating you? Yes, this may seem like a waste of time and invasive, especially if you are busy, but it is vital to all concerned that an accurate picture of your health is gained BEFORE  any treatment takes place.  Personally, I would  be very concerned if no discussion was had and no medical history taken.

9. Discuss your expectations with the therapist.  You don’t want to waste your time and money and you don’t want to waste theirs.

10. Trust your gut! It will tell you when you have found the right therapist for you.

I hope you have found this informative and helpful.  Let me know if you have or if there is something else I should have added.  Its all about sharing!

Contact either Amanda or Duncan on 01342 842098 to discuss your needs. It costs you nothing for a telephone call and we always promise to make sure you get the right treatment for your needs.
